The 1st Step To Better Breath
Zinc acetate and water are the ingredients. It sounds a little chemically artificial but is more natural than you might think. Zinc is an essential mineral found throughout your body. It is needed for wound healing, maintaining fertility and supporting the senses of vision, smell and taste.
Acetate comes from the Latin word for vinegar (which is about 6% acetic acid). Vinegar can be produced naturally by fermentation of alcohol, think red wine vinegar. Combining zinc with vinegar and adding a little heat produces zinc acetate.
You have possibly noticed that zinc is an ingredient in many mouthwashes. Its usefulness in controlling breath odor is well recognized. One mode of action is to react with odor molecules and neutralize the bad smelling gases. An example is that when hydrogen sulfide (skunk gas), which is produced by some oral bacteria, reacts with zinc the smell disappears.
Zinc is also found to interfere with the metabolism of some bacteria. This makes them unhealthy so that less smelly gas is produced and fewer new bacteria are being created. One scientific article concluded: “Some commercial mouth rinses are markedly less effective than a simple solution of zinc acetate.”
